Iron Madein are currently in South America with HELLOWEEN, however
both bands are suffering problems. The first concert at Metropolitan Hall in Rio de
Janeiro on December 2 was riddled with 45 degree celsius heat. One person among the 10,000
gathered smacked Maiden axeman Janick Gers with an unknown object. As a result there was
no encore. The next concert in Campinas (one hour from Sao Paulo) was scheduled for
December 4. However, BW&BK scribes attending the show say that it rained all day long
and promoters had huge problems with equipment. They decided to cancel the show, but they
only told the 15,000 fans at 10:40 p.m.. At 10:45 a riot started and the promoters were
forced to call the Military Police because people started to destroy the vebnue. Fans were
confronted by police and people started throwing rocks, refuse etc... The rain looked to
be a factor the following night in Sao Paulo. Furthermore, the concert in Chile was
cancelled and Nicko McBrain stated that the reason was due to the political troubles
between Chile and England about the ex-dictator Pinochet. The bands are also scheduled to
play in Curitiba (Brazil) and Beunos Aires (Argentina).
Good Luck To The Boys, Kheldan!

be released by EMI on the 23rd November. The box will be in the shape of Eddie's head
(with flashing eyes) and will open outwards to reveal the CDs. The bonus CD, In Profile,
isn't really an interview btw - it's more like someone narrating the history of Maiden
with sound clips mixed in between. You may get more information on the Box set at the Official Maiden site

The little bit of mystery surrounding Futureal has been cleared up by the online store at
the official Maiden site. As was advertised before, it is only available from the fan club
or the website - but this only applies if you live in certain countries, including the UK.
In Germany, for example, you should be able to find it in the normal record stores. You
may purchase the CD at so what are you

After it's first week of release Bruce Dickinson's Album'The Chemical Wedding' reached
number 8 in the UK indie charts but failed to enter the top 40 of the main charts (I'm not
sure of it's exact position). CW is eligible for the indie charts because it was released
on Bruce's independent label - Air Raid Records.

Official Press Release
=================Iron Maiden will be previewing their new studio album with a football
tour of Europe in March.
The album, entitled VIRTUAL XI, will be released World-wide on March 23 and is produced
and mixed by bassist and founder member Steve Harris and Nigel Green. The Epic album
carries eight tracks:
1. FUTUREAL
2. THE ANGEL AND THE GAMBLER
3. LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE
4. THE CLANSMAN
5. WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE
6. THE EDUCATED FOOL
7. DON'T LOOK TO THE EYES OF A STRANGER
8. COMO ESTAIS AMIGOS
As usual, Maiden have given a lot of thought to the packaging so the cover and booklet
combine the three things the band are most into - Football, Computer Games...... and of
course Eddie.
Artwork was by Melvin Grant ( Fear of The Dark) and the design is by Synthetic
Dimensions, a company specialising in Computer Games who are making the forthcoming Iron
Maiden Game, " Ed Hunter "
The football element comes in with the (Virtual Photograph) of their Internationally
flavored VIRTUAL XI team which comprises, along with the band, Paul Gascoigne (Glasow
Rangers & England), Faustino Asprilla (Newcastle Utd & Columbia), Ian Wright
(Arsenal & England), Stuart Pearce (Newcastle Utd & ex England Captain), Patrick
Viera (Arsenal & France) and Marc Overmars (Arsenal & Holland).
Say's Harris "We're delighted with the album and feel the songs and the playing
are as strong as we've ever done. And its great to do the promotion for the album as a
football tour, especially in World Cup year!"
Maidens' (especially Harris') passion for football is well documented. From the very
beginning a Maiden XI has played all over the World during tours. Crew were often hired
for their footballing skills as opposed to the technical proficiency.
Now Maiden, rather than slogging round Europe for promotion prior to the album release,
have convinced label EMI to underwrite a Football Tour of Europe. These will be serious
games in proper football stadiums. Maiden have enlisted some serious help to ensure
victory. The following ex-international footballers will play with the band at various
times on the tour as part of a squad of 15 players. - Tony Woodcock, Terry Butcher, Frank
Worthington, Archie Gemmill, Paul Mariner, Paul Walsh, Joe Jordan, and Neil Webb.
Maidens' Virtual XI will play sides made up of bands and local ex-Internationals in the
following cities: Paris (Mar 11th), Berlin (Mar 13th), Madrid (Mar 18th), Stockholm (Mar
22nd) and finally Milan (mar 25th). (Check local press for details)
Says vocalist Blaze Bayley "The football, and the guys we'll be privileged to play
with, is a fantastic start to what's going to be a busy year for Maiden. We're delighted
with the album and look forward to starting a World Tour in Europe at the end of April.
We're going out with a mega production and a few mega tonnes of explosives!"
"There's also the computer game - Ed Hunter - coming later. I was at Synthetic
Dimensions yesterday and its looking amazing. But more on that later. See you all on the
pitch!" |

Tour Information
============Maiden have always been a special band to their fans. Despite numerous line
up changes - 1980 (two), 1981, 1984, 1989 & 1993 - the intent of the band never
wavered. The dedication and imagination surrounding a new Maiden album always delights the
fans, and it's the fans, who have kept the band in the forefront of heavy rock since the
eighties. During a glittering career spanning twenty two years, around forty five million
albums sold, massive world tours with production to match, the band has never lost sight
of this fact.
And, despite the huge success over the years, the character and characters of the band
has changed little. Say's Steve Harris, "None of us have really changed very much.
Our financial circumstances may have, but we all still basically are into the same things
we always were. For me that's music and football - and, of course my family. I still play
for the same local football team I played for when I was fifteen. It's always been a
passion. Especially West Ham of course.
Blaze on the other hand spends most of his spare time - when not on his motor bike -
playing computer games. He say's "I'm always at the front of the queue when a new
game comes out."
Say's Harris "We figure our fans are pretty much the same as we are, with pretty
much the same interests, so around march of last year, we thought "it's world cup
year in 98, let's get football involved in the new album." we were already working on
a computer game at that time, so we figured to bring that in too."
The title of the new album, VIRTUAL XI, reflects both, as does the artwork for the
cover featuring Eddie, Virtual Reality and football. And in true Maiden fashion, they set
about the project with great determination and imagination.
Say's Harris, We thought we'd try to get some great players to join us in a shot as the
Virtual XI.....The Virtual Team. We approached some of our favourites, and fortunately,
they were into the idea. Due to everyone's different schedules, we couldn't get them all
together in one place, so Ross Halfin went around the country taking individual shots
against a green background. Synthetic Dimensions who are making our game, then used
computers to assemble the players with us as a virtual football team....a Virtual XI. We
brought in some of the best overseas players to give it an international flavor. The
result was brilliant and we were delighted to have a "team" that included such
great players as Paul Gasgoine (Glassgow Rangers & England), Faustino Asprilla (Parma
& Columbia), Ian Wright (Arsenal & England), Stuart Pearce (Newcastle Utd & ex
England Captain), Patrick Viera (Arsenal & France) and Marc Overmars (Arsenal &
Holland).
"We always have football matches on tour and tend to hire road crew who can play
for the team. Normally, before an album, Record Companies have a couple of band members
going around the territories talking to the press, doing promotion. This is standard for
any band, but it's a bit boring. So we decided to have a football tour instead. So the
European promo tour is actually a football tour with matches in Spain, Italy, Sweden and
France. EMI agreed to support this as long as we didn't have one of our massive album
launch parties, which cost them a fortune! So we're taking out a squad of fifteen and to
strengthen the side we are taking a number of ex-international players like Tony Woodcock,
Terry Butcher, Archie Gemmill, Paul Mariner, Paul Walsh and Neill Webb. Each country we
play will have some of it's own ex-internationals along with other bands and the media.
This is going to be serious though, real games. I can't wait!"
So with football dominating the album promotion, the band turned to the computer game.
Blaze takes up the story. "We've been working with Synthetic Dimensions - this
amazingly advanced computer game and design company near me in Wolverhampton - for some
time on a game. The game is called Ed Hunter . It is about Eddie, and has Maiden backing
tracks. It's a shoot'em up. Eddie himself has more detail than the T-Rex in Jurassic Park
(and is much more frightening) and has eighteen movement points in his face alone. He can
even sing along to the songs! Syndime is really doing an unbelievable job. Unfortunately,
due to the approval stages, we won't be able to release simultaneously with the album, so
it will come out in September. It's likely to be on CD-Rom and Playstation.
"But, although the game's not ready just yet. We've used a lot of the graphics for
the CD booklet and single cover and all that. It all looks amazing."
We are also using the game for the video for the first single of the Album, "The
Angel And The Gambler". We were told that if we had to start the video from scratch
it would cost over 1.2 million pounds! but, as we have through the virtual world and loads
of great characters already there, we can put the band live into this virtual world. So
were going to be playing live at a huge gig on an asteroid near Alpha Centauri. For the
pyros we blow up a neighboring planet. And the gig is simulcast to a space bar filled with
incredible creature from the game. And Steve is playing cards in the corner with Eddie!
It's really fucking outrageous.
"Eddie, Computer Games, Football Tours - and this is supposed to be work!"
Say's Harris, "We started writing early last year, and went into my Barnyard
Studio around July. We finished mixing in late January. We were very proud of this
album.....although, I suppose we're proud of all of 'em. But this ones a bit special.
There are only eight songs on it., so they're all long, which gives us the opportunity to
really stretch out musically. The songs are a variety of topics from the Virtual Reality
in the opening track through to a sad but powerful closing track written by Blaze and
Janick about the Faulklands war. There is also a track inspired by the Braveheart and Rob
Roy films, which is about the Scottish clans struggle for freedom. When I wrote the music,
it had a Celtic flavour, which is why I wrote the lyrics about the clans."
"The single, "The Angel And The Gambler" was written while driving down
the M4 to Wales using a small cassette recorder I had with me. It has a real 70's rhythm
feel to it similar to the Who and UFO which I like a lot"
The first single, "The Angel And The Gambler" will be released on March 9th,
followed by Virtual XI on march 23. During this period the European Football Tour takes
place at the start of - as usual - a very hectic year for Maiden. Touring starts in Europe
an the late April and during the rest of 98, the band will tour extensively all over North
and South America, Europe, Japan, Australasia........and a few more places besides.
April 1998 will also see the publication of "Run To The Hills: The Official
Biography"by Mick Wall. Written with full co-operation of band, ex-members,
management, agents and the other involved parties. A close and honest look at the band and
it's history.
Another quiet year in the life of Iron Maiden. |

Solid facts on the new album
======================A football match between Maiden and French journalists will take
place in Paris on March 11th.

is the album's cover. Yes, I still have the picture. No, I still can't put it online yet,
but a color version will be available soon!
The first single, The Angel And The Gambler, will be released on March 9th. Expect an
edit version of the song. The front sleeve features a picture by Derek Riggs !
A 3-track advance tape is floating around. It's rumoured to feature Futureal, The Angel
And The Gambler and The Clansman (to be confirmed).
As far as the tour is concerned, it will take place from May to September, and the band
will go back in the studio in September as well. Since 4 tracks from the Virtual XI

Beast
More info on the new album
=====================12 songs have been recorded. Only 8 are used for the album, and
the remaining four will be used on the next album.
In Japan, the album will be released with a bonus CD featuring live tracks.
Some info on each song
===================
1. FUTUREAL : the story of a kid who plays video games so much that he becomes part of
the game. This is the only song related to the title of the album.
2. THE ANGEL AND THE GAMBLER : an angel manipulating evil guys in order to accomplish
some dirty job.
3. LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE : a story inspired by a typhoon in which Steve got caught
one day : power was cut off, the kids got scared, etc.
4. THE CLANSMAN : a "Braveheart" kind of song (although not related to
Braveheart himself) , taking place in ancient Scotland.
5. WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE : a story about planets. My guess is that it's inspired by a
movie. We'll see...
6. THE EDUCATED FOOL : ???
7. DONīT LOOK AT THE EYES OF A STRANGER : the story of a kid whose parents always told
not to deal with strangers. A Fear of the Dark kind of song.
8. COMO ESTAIS AMIGOS : a song about war...
